On ca. 8 ha, in different zones, like Alpine garden, dune, medicinal plants, tree garden, water and around further 10000 plants may be admired. The greenhouse (Loki Schmidt Tropenhaus) shows plants, mostly from the areas of the Canary Islands, Madagaskar and Africa.

The university herbarium houses around 85.000 proofs about higher plants, mosses, algae, lichens and fungi. Events, like guided tours, garden festivals, fungi exhibitions or children's holiday fun takes place regularly.

Together with the surgery for garden therapy Thomas Henschel, the Botanical Garden developed a treatment concept, which puts emphasis on positive effects of gardening. Because, gardening is known to be an effective method to reduce stress in everyday professional life.
